The following lists highlight some of the barbaric animal abuses that are common in just two countries from the area. The lists are not complete...

China :

- China holds a macabre record in animal cruelty. Traditional Chinese culture holds a belief that adrenalines released in a suffering animal will flavour meat, meaning the slaughter of cats, dogs and other animals for consumption is often prolonged & barbaric in comparison to western method.
- In June this year death gangs hired by the authorities in Hanzhong province, beat to death an estimated 35,000 stray & domestic dogs (A similar cull was used before the Beijing Olympics to remove strays).
- Animals are routinely skinned BEFORE they have been given the final compassion of death.
- Live calves & goats cruelly used as an "attraction" when fed to lions & tigers for the "delight" of zoo visitors.
- Moon Bears, confined in small cages for the duration of their lives while their bile is inhumanely extracted for traditional medicine.
- A delicacy is for a primate to have the top section of skull removed so diners can eat it's living brains (properties also hold some belief in traditional medicine).

China does not yet have in place any animal welfare laws protecting domestic & livestock animals although we are waiting for news of a law now in the draft stage.

South Korea :

- 2,000,000 million dogs per year are electrocuted, bludgeoned or strangled to death each year in South Korea for their meat, even though the Korean Animal Protection Law passed in 1991 considers dogs to be domestic pets & forbids the sale & consumption of dog meat.
- In Korea cats are not viewed as domestic pets, they live feral & are treated as vermin. Attempts are made to control the stray population by inhumane methods like beating the animals to death in sacks or, in some cases, boiling them alive in large pressure cookers to supply the insatiable demand for "traditional" remedies in Korea.
- Like China there is also a market for bear bile.

Although Korea does have animal protection law, the laws are not comprehensive, understood or enforced.

The most realistic way forward is to make people aware of what's happening to these poor animals & also the charities or organizations that they can support that try to help. Once we have enough members we could all sign their petitions for them too.
